​Our Medicine in Remote Areas (MIRA) course is approved by the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. Learners will also receive a level 4 award in Medicine in Remote Areas (MIRA) from OCN Credit4learning which gives academic recognition.

This course has been developed for all medical professional who works in or wants to work within remote areas as a tier 1 remote medic. We have a team of professionals who have focused the delivery of this course to all aspects of clinical care that may present particular challenges in such conditions. We adopt a blended style of learning which include pre-reading, self directed study, group work, presentations and practical workshops.

Learners need to expect to work in a variety of outdoor conditions.

This programme is fully approved and can be funded by the ELCAS scheme. Centre number 3274.

​Student must have previous medical experience before commencing this course. As a minimum learners need to have FPOS intermediate or demonstrate equivalence.

​The content for the remote area medicine course is comprehensive and covers the following:

  • Clinical scope of practice
  • Preparations and role of medical officer
  • Triage and crisis management
  • Patient assessment and diagnosis
  • Airway management (i-gel, LMA, intubation and emergency airway)
  • Chest decompression
  • Chest and abdominal trauma
  • Shock, haemorrhage control (tourniquets, celox,) and fluids with Lethal Triad
  • Fracture management and various splints including dislocation reduction
  • Skin issues and closure techniques
  • Minor injuries
  • Medical emergencies
  • Minor limb and back issues
  • ALS
  • Diving illness awareness
  • Extremes of weathers
  • Altitude and mountain medicine awareness
  • Drugs and pharmacology issues
  • Prolonged patient care
  • RTC extrication

​After completing both theory and practical assessment the following certificates will be awarded:

  • Medicine in Remote Areas  (MIRA - Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh)- valid for 3 years
  • International Trauma life Support (ITLS) - Basic Provider certificate valid for 3 years
